Tim-bor Wood Preservative
Tim-bor by Sashco Products is a borate based wood preservative. It is highly effective in preventing damage caused by wood rot and wood boring insects. Use Tim-bor to guard against wet, dry and brown rot as well as insects such as termites, house borers, powderpost beetles, and carpenter ants.
Tim-bor is not a stain additive. To be effective it must be mixed with water and applied directly to the wood prior to final staining. Tim-bor is most commonly applied by brushing, spraying or dipping. From there it will penetrate wood to create protective shell.
Tim-bor is a refined form of Borax. Borax is known to be safe for people and pets. It is also odorless, colorless and will not affect the strength of the wood. If applied correctly, it will provide many years of protection.
Available in powdered form, Tim-bor wood treatment is packaged in two sizes. Use the larger, 25 lb bag for whole house projects. This size is packaged in a 6 gallon pail for easy mixing. Plan to mix at a rate of one pound of Tim-bor to one gallon of water, which should protect up to 150 square feet. For smaller projects, 1.5 pound packets are available.
A second coating of Tim-bor can be done within 24 hours of the first treatment. Because of their vulnerability, log ends and check cracks should be coated as thoroughly as possible.
Prior to treatment, the wood surfaces should be free of dust, dirt and any other contaminants. Any prior coatings should be removed as well as they will prevent proper Tim-bor penetration.
Final staining can be done after 48 hours of treatment. However, it is best not to wait too long after that time period to apply the stain. Tim-bor will eventually leach out of wood which is not protected with a water-repelling stain.
